Preface – Modern Science and Technology for the Caribbean

Modern Science and Technology for the Caribbean has been written in Accordance with the prescribed curriculum for the Caribbean Primary and Lower Secondary Educational Programme.

The philosophy of the texts is to integrate Science with Technology and acquaint teachers with the innovation of teaching Science and Technology with other school subjects.

The series comprises a set of 21 books for the students of Infants One and Two and Grades 1 to 5, that is, 7 Students’ books, 7 Activity books and 7 Teachers’ guide.

The Unit/Concepts have been divided into four strands:

  • Life Sciences covers Diversity and Classification, Structure and Function, and Ecosystems
  • Physical Sciences covers Matter and Materials, Forces, Motion and Structures, and Energy
  • Earth and Space Sciences covers Earth’s Weather, Earth’s Resources and the Solar System
  • Technology covers Technology and Science, Technology, Society and the Environment

It is desirable that all students in the Primary Schools be given the basic scientific and technological knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and training for practical use.

The series Modern Science and Technology for the Caribbean will help students to:

  • develop a curiosity about their surrounding and the world and learn to find answers to their questions.
  • develop critical thinking and inquire as “Critical Thinking” needs to start early, ideally in primary schools, after pre-school exposure has instilled self-confidence as well as creativity in the child.
  • understanding the importance of interdependence between living and non-living things and realise the importance of harmony in the natural world.
  • learn about the concept of good health and hygiene.
  • adapt to a world that is increasingly more influenced and shaped by scientific developments and thinking and develop the ability to communicate scientific observations and technological processes clearly.
  • distinguish the relationship between science and technology, know how heach affects and influences the environment, individual and society.

Many simple experiments are incorporated int he texts wherever relevant. These experiments can be performed with easy-to-make appartus, many of which can be comfortably improvised by the students themselves.

Colourful illustrations portraying real-life situations help to enhance the presentation of concepts and make them more meaningful and clear to the students.

On completing this course, students will be well prepared for more extensive studies in various subjects at the secondary level.
